Florida took a battering over the last two years from some pesky hurricanes, but nothing can compare to Katrina who barreled into New Orleans and tried her best to wipe out one of our greatest cities. I was fortunate enough to be able to help to some extent, as along with many other civilian aircraft, a team of us from Sikorsky flew to New Orleans to do what we could. We were able to lift about twenty-five people from rooftops and ferry them to safety before the military arrived and took over. We also delivered food, water and medical supplies during our relief efforts. There were many, many civilian aircraft doing the same thing and thanks to the two control facilities there were no collisions. Rooftop landings were done in the day and also at night with night vision goggles. The pilots had military experience with these. I have not seen much about the effort of the private sector and the lives they saved so I would like to share with you some of the pictures we brought back of the catastrophe called Katrina.
